Adhesion Solutions

Physical Errors:

  • Ensure the print bed is level. This ensures that the space between the bed and the print head is equal all the way around the first layer.

    • This can be done by placing tape layers between the bed surface and the heater, or by re-leveling the print bed (small printers only)

  • The print surface should also be as clean as possible. Remove any print scum and clean with warm water towel and alcohol.

File Troubleshoots:

  • Slow the filament feed rate

    • Allows the print to settle on the bed, sacrifices time in return for success, but one print will always take less time than several failed attempts.

  • Increase Bed Temp (5° at a time)

    • Allows the filament to cool slower and allows a longer period of time for the print to “glue” to the bed (only available on big printer).

Other Ways to Increase Adhesion:

  • Turn off Print Cool Fan

    • When placing the first layer, using the cooling fan will negate heating the bed. After the first layer has been extruded, the fan can be turned back on.

  • Some printers will suggest lowering nozzle heat. This should prevent the filament from becoming too runny and interfering with adhesion. This should only be done when the filament is noticeably runny. Lowering the nozzle heat too much will completely destroy any chances of adhesion. Think of it like trying to use hot glue without plugging it in.

  • Cover the bed in Blue Tape. The texture of this tape allows the prints to adhere better.

  • Apply a layer of glue stick. This should be done while the bed is on low heat. The sticky layer not only resolves any micro issues in leveling the bed but also provides the optimal surface for print adhesion. Hairspray will provide similar conditions, but both options are messy and should only be done in severe situations.

  • Large models with a bigger base should be limited, as they will have bad adhesion

    • This can be avoided in some prints by re-orienting the model during the slicing step
